Overview
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s Sicut cervus is among the most beloved and frequently performed motets of the Renaissance. Setting the opening verses of Psalm 42 ("As the deer longs for flowing streams"), the work expresses spiritual yearning and devotion through Palestrina’s characteristically graceful counterpoint and transparent textures.

Published in the composer’s Motettorum Liber Quartus (1584), Sicut cervus exemplifies the balanced polyphonic style for which Palestrina became renowned. Flowing melodic lines, careful text declamation, and seamless imitation combine to create a work of remarkable serenity and expressive restraint. Equally suitable for liturgical use, concert performance, and educational study, it remains a cornerstone of the choral repertoire.

This edition includes both the prima pars (Sicut cervus) and the traditionally paired secunda pars (Sitivit anima mea). While either section may be performed independently, the two motets form a complementary musical and textual unit and are frequently presented together in performance.

In accordance with common modern editorial practice, the work has been transposed upward by a minor third from the original print to facilitate performance at contemporary concert pitch while preserving the relationships and character of the source. The edition presents the music in a clean modern engraving designed to support efficient rehearsal and performance while remaining faithful to the original source.
