Voicing: SSATTB
Duration: approx. 5 minutes
Language: Greek (Kyrie text; Latin Mass Ordinary)

Overview
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's Missa Assumpta est Maria stands among the crowning achievements of his sacred output and is one of more than one hundred Mass settings he composed. It is a parody Mass built on his own motet of the same name, reworking that motet's melodic and contrapuntal material into a radiant six-voice setting of the Mass Ordinary.

The Kyrie unfolds in the traditional tripartite form (Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison), with each section developed through the imitative polyphony and balanced voice-leading for which Palestrina is renowned. The six-voice texture allows for rich sonority and flexible pairing of voices while preserving the transparency and expressive restraint characteristic of his mature style.

This edition presents the Kyrie in a modern performing score prepared from a careful comparison of the original sources, including material consulted at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Vatican Apostolic Library). The original alla breve has been metrically transposed to modern common time, with mensural signs, clefs, and editorial accidentals rendered according to established Renaissance performance practice and clearly distinguished from the source. Full editorial notes are included with the score. This movement is offered as a standalone edition; the complete Missa Assumpta est Maria is in preparation and will be released as a full edition.
